We have learnt about numbers.
These numbers are made by using the ten digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,
and 9, which are the most common symbolic representation of numb-
ers in the modern world.
You must have seen the numerals written on clocks and watches for
hours, numbering of the classes in the schools, parts of a question,
etc.
These are the numbers written in Roman numerals.
To write numbers, Roman used 7 symbols, namely I, V, X, L, C, D and M.
These symbols are given below with their respective values :

1 5 10 50 100 500 1000 There are some rules to writen in roman numerals.
Rule 1 : Repetition of symbols means addition of their values. No
symbol is repeated more than three timesin a Roman numbers. Example : I = 1, II = 1+1 = 2, III = 1+1+1= 3
Rule 2: When a symbol of smaller value is placed on the left side of a bigger symbol, we subtract its value to find the Roman numeral so formed. Example : 4 = 5 - 1 = V - I = IV
Rule 3: When a symbol of smaller value is placed on the right, we
add its value to find the Roman numeral so formed.
Examples : 6 = 5 + 1 = VI
7 = 5 + 2 = V + I + I = VII
8 = 5 + 3 = V + I + I + I = VIII
9 = 5 + 4 = V + I + I + I + I = ( It is wrong )
